Nails
Clean, manicured nails are a must. However, maintaining them can take a lot of time and money. It certainly does for me. Like all things, I’ve found some shortcuts around it all. Let’s go over some options.
Acrylic Nails
Acrylic nails have been around for a long time. I got acrylic nails when I first moved to LA. They need to be redone every two to three weeks. I quickly grew tired of the upkeep and went au naturel.

Gel Nails
Gel nails are a newer artificial nail that many women prefer over acrylic because of their flexibility, which makes them less prone to cracks and chips. They are faster to apply, not as thick, and more natural-looking than acrylics, too. Also, gel nails are odorless and don’t require the strong-smelling chemicals to apply or remove them, like acrylic nails do. Curing time for gel nails is shorter than for the acrylic ones. They do come at a price, though!
To be honest, I don’t recommend either type of nail—unless you just have really unhealthy or super-weak nails (then I’d say get gel nails). One reason I opt against them is because both processes are damaging to your real nails. Gel nails aren’t as severe, but they are still damaging when removed. The other big reasons are the time and money. For me, it’s just one more thing to do during my packed day. Instead, I keep my nails short and buff them instead of polishing. You can buy a buffer at any drugstore. Buff your nails with rapid movements, as if you’re filing the top of your nails, until they’re shiny.
